Drought Forces Silicon Valley Triathlon Move To Half Moon Bay
HALF MOON BAY (CBS SF) - California's drought has forced the relocation of the Silicon Valley International Triathlon outside of the South Bay.
The event, which normally includes a swim in the Uvas Reservoir near Morgan Hill, can't be held at on the planned course because the water level is too low.
The 22nd annual running of the race, set for April 20th, will now be held in Half Moon Bay.
"It is unfortunate the drought conditions have forced us to relocate this longtime South Bay race, but with low water levels in the Uvas Reservoir, the swim could not take place," said USA Productions Race Director Ryan Coelho in a press release. "We are grateful to and excited about the new venue for this year's races and the partnerships we have formed with the City of Half Moon Bay. The calm waters of the Pillar Point Harbor, and the coastal trails for the bike and run portions of the race will make this an ideal location for athletes of all levels."
Organizers released a video of what the revised cycling course will look like:
"We've got much colder weather (in Half Moon Bay)...I actually prefer it," said 2010 Silicon Valley amateur champion Jess Smith. "I tend to bake on warmer swims."
Registration for the event, and a shorter sprint competition are still open.
