Suspect Driver Surrenders In Antioch Fatal Hit & Run
ANTIOCH (BCN) - Antioch police have arrested a motorist suspected of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash early Sunday morning.
Steavean Taylor, 21, turned himself in to police on Sunday night and was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run causing death, Antioch police said.
The crash happened at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday when a silver 1999 Lexus SUV crashed into a tree in the 2400 block of Mahogany Way.
Police said the passenger side of the vehicle was "wrapped around the tree" and the passenger, a 19-year-old Antioch man, was trapped inside. Emergency crews extricated the man from the SUV and he was flown to UC Davis Medical Center, where he later died.
Witnesses told police the SUV was speeding prior to the crash, and that the driver ran from the scene afterward. Taylor is being held on $100,000 bail, a county jail employee said.
Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to contact Antioch police Detective James Stenger at (925) 779-6894.
