Driver Leads CHP On Chase Across Bay Bridge
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A driver was arrested around midday Saturday after leading a California Highway Patrol officer on a chase across the Bay Bridge, a CHP spokesman said.
The chase began a few minutes before noon in Oakland when the officer spotted a vehicle with no license plates and tried to pull it over, CHP Officer Michael Ferguson said.
The driver wouldn't stop, and instead drove onto the bridge and tried to evade the officer, weaving through traffic at about 50 mph, Ferguson said.
"He was using all the lanes to get away," Ferguson said.
The CHP happened to have a helicopter overhead, which tracked the driver as the officer followed him.
Once the driver reached San Francisco, he took the Fremont Street off-ramp toward downtown and the CHP officer lost sight of him, Ferguson said.
The chase was discontinued, and the CHP requested that San Francisco police be on the lookout for the car.
San Francisco police spotted the vehicle a short time later, and the driver was taken into custody after apparently jumping out of the car and trying to run away, Ferguson said.
The driver's name has not been released and it is not yet clear why he fled.
No injuries were reported.
