Driver Flees After Crashing Into San Jose Home, Causing Gas Leak
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A truck driver who crashed into a North San Jose home and caused a gas leak Monday morning was at large, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a truck that went inside a home in the 3000 block of Rowley Drive around 7:15 a.m., police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said.
Homeowner Bob Brown was at the breakfast table when the crash happened.
"I was sitting there and all of a sudden I heard like a huge explosion," Brown said.
The driver left the scene on foot and hadn't been found as of about 9:30 a.m., Garcia said.
"I went over there. The driver got out of the truck. I approached him and said, 'stop.' And, he just took off," Brown said.
A shelter-in-place order has been issued for residents in the area, according to Garcia.
Rowley Drive is closed between Piedmont Road and Stonewood Lane, Garcia said.
The crash led to a "severe" gas leak and PG&E was called to the scene, he said.
The truck crashed into a gas riser, which connects the gas meter to a three-quarter-inch gas line, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.
Utility personnel arrived to the scene about 30 minutes after the crash and stopped the flow of gas shortly before 9 a.m., Sarkissian said.
Service was disrupted for the home where the crash occurred, Sarkissian said.
Repairs were underway to the damaged riser and there was no estimate for when the work would be completed, she said.
Brown said investigators told him the truck was stolen.
