Driver Arrested After Entering Doyle Drive Construction Zone During Closure
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- California Highway Patrol officers arrested a San Francisco man Friday afternoon after he drove into a closed section of Doyle Drive and refused to obey officers' orders to pull over.
At 2:58 p.m., Golden Gate Bridge Patrol officers contacted CHP officers with the Marin area office, advising them of a possibly intoxicated driver who had pulled over on the side of Alexander Avenue in Sausalito, according to the CHP.
When Golden Gate Bridge personnel contacted the driver, 37-year-old Edward Wong, he started his vehicle and proceeded to drive back onto southbound U.S. Highway 101, heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge entrance, CHP officials said.
Because Doyle Drive had closed Friday due to construction, extra CHP officers were patrolling the area.
Two CHP units located Wong's vehicle driving south of the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge in the first lane, CHP officials said.
Wong ignored officers attempts get him to pull over and kept driving, past the toll plaza, into a closed portion of Doyle Drive, as he accelerated speed, knocking down a lowered stop arm, according to the CHP.
As Wong continued driving south on Doyle Drive, he rounded a left curve in the roadway, just north of the 19th Avenue off ramp, where several CHP patrol vehicles were stationed at the entrance of Doyle Drive, CHP officials said.
Wong was unable to continue into the closure due to the officer's vehicles and was forced to try and re-enter active lanes of traffic. Heavy traffic and pursuing officers prevented Wong from re-entering traffic and his vehicle was boxed in, according to the CHP.
Wong locked his doors and refused to exit his vehicle as officers attempted to get him to come out, CHP officials said.
An officer was able to break the passenger side window of Wong's vehicle and unlock the doors, according to the CHP.
Officers removed Wong from his vehicle and took him into custody.
Officers conducted an evaluation of Wong and determined he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the CHP said.
Due to Wong's disregard for the safety of other motorists, as well as crews working on Doyle Drive, Wong was charged with felony evasion and booked into San Francisco County Jail, according to the CHP.
