Drawing To Choose 8 California Redistricting Commission Members
SACRAMENTO (AP) -- A transformational political reform set in motion by voters two years ago approaches its biggest milestone this week.
Eight Californians—out of 30,000 who submitted applications— will be selected to sit on an independent redistricting commission.
They will be chosen Thursday in a random drawing of the 36 finalists and will then select the final six commission members from the remaining pool.
Supporters hope the 14-member commission will mark a turning point in the gerrymandering process that for decades has been controlled by the Legislature and dominated by political horse-trading.
Opponents say the citizens' commission is filled with problems and will undoubtedly face a legal challenge.
