Dozens Arrested In Oakland Sweep Of 'Burn Out Family Mafia'
OAKLAND (KCBS) – Dozens of people have been arrested in Oakland on drug, weapons and murder charges following a sweep by local and federal authorities.
Culminating an 18-month undercover investigation, including one of the largest wiretaps in Oakland history, police have arrested 45 members of what Officer Johnna Watson said is being called the "Burn Out Family Mafia."
KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:
"This is one of the largest operations we've had in the history of Oakland as far as involving a very well organized crime family known as the Burn Out Family," Watson said. "They were involved in illegal possession of firearms, narcotics dealing as well as credit card fraud."
31 are under federal indictment for the sale of cocaine and heroin and for dealing near three East Oakland schools. Four others are charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
Police seized 22 guns.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and Secret Service were also part of the investigation.
The indictment said that the Burn Out Family Mafia was operating mainly around 82nd Avenue and Birch Street, 72nd and Hawley and 88th and A Street in East Oakland.
