San Jose Trump Rally Violence Lawsuit Allowed To Proceed
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – A lawsuit brought on by Donald Trump supporters against the City of San Jose over violence following the candidate's rally has been allowed to proceed.
On June 2nd, supporters of the Republican presidential nominee were attacked by protesters following the event at the San Jose Convention Center. At least 20 people were arrested in connection with the violence.
In the lawsuit, the Trump supporters claimed the city did not do enough to protect them.
On Thursday, a federal judge dismissed three of their claims, but let the claim of negligence stand.
"They knew it was going to be a very large event. That there might be protesters and there might be violence," California Republican Party Vice Chair Harmeet Dhillon told KPIX 5. "And unfortunately the tactic they chose there was seemingly to protect property and not humans."
San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Police Chief Eddie Garcia are among those targeted in the lawsuit. They call the claims absurd and said police acted quickly to protect the public.
