DNA Results Lead To Arrest In San Leandro Sexual Assault
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - A man suspected of sexually assaulting a female victim at knifepoint in San Leandro last week has been taken into custody, police said Thursday.
On March 20, a man entered the victim's home in the 700 block of Bridge Road shortly before 5:30 p.m., brandished a knife and sexually assaulted her, police said.
After the assault, the suspect ran away in an unknown direction.
Police said that images from a surveillance camera and a city traffic camera identified Claysor Diaz, 21, as a suspect in the crime.
Detectives located Diaz in Oakland a day after the assault. He was driving a vehicle matching the description of a possible suspect vehicle seen leaving the crime scene, according to police.
Police arrested Diaz on drug related charges after he allegedly was found in possession of methamphetamine.
DNA evidence was submitted to the Alameda County Crime Lab last week, and on Thursday the lab confirmed that DNA located at the scene of the sexual assault belonged to Diaz.
Diaz was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of rape, burglary and home invasion robbery. He is expected to be arraigned early next week after the case is presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Monday, police said.
