Live WWII-Era Grenade Found In Monterey County Home
PACIFIC GROVE (CBS SF) - Some homes in Pacific Grove were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after a live rocket-propelled grenade was discovered at one house, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
Staff from an estate sale cleaning service found the World War II-era grenade in a garage cabinet at a home on 17 Mile Drive on Wednesday afternoon, sheriff's officials said.
The Pacific Grove Police Department responded and closed the street to traffic and pedestrians between the 800 and 1000 blocks. Nearby homes were evacuated, sheriff's officials said.
A consultation with U.S. Air Force explosive ordnance disposal experts revealed that the grenade was live.
The Air Force explosives experts could not get there quickly, and they authorized the sheriff's bomb squad to respond, sheriff's officials said.
The bomb squad placed the grenade in a containment vessel and took it to an isolated location where the explosive device was rendered safe.
