Deputy shot in Union City while serving eviction notice; area lockdown lifted early Thursday
Police in Union City lifted the lockdown of the area near Dowe Avenue and Alvarado Niles Road early Thursday morning after the end of a standoff that started when an Alameda County sheriff's deputy was shot while serving an eviction notice.
Union City police sent out a message shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday, saying the police activity in the area was "resolved" and that there was no longer a danger to the public. However the message did not specify that the suspect was in custody.
Police later provided an update late Thursday morning, saying that officers found the two suspects in the shooting of the deputy dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Video taken at the scene showed authorities using drones and what appeared to be flash-bang devices during the standoff shortly after midnight. The standoff lasted for hours.
There is still a large police perimeter outside the building in the industrial park where the suspect who shot the deputy appeared to be holed up.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Alameda County deputies were in the area of 33000 block of Dowe Avenue serving an eviction notice when someone opened fire not long after they arrived. Alameda Sheriff PIO Captain Tya Modeste said they do not yet know if deputies fired back, but one deputy was injured in the shooting.
A source told KPIX the deputy's arm was broken in the shooting and would require surgery, but he is expected to survive.
Union City police said the suspect is not yet in custody during a Wednesday afternoon press conference. They added that the suspect was believed to be in the area and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Law enforcement were still in a standoff around 11:30 p.m. but had already knocked down the door of the building and appeared to have searched the inside with a drone.
Chopper video from the scene in what appeared to be an industrial area north of Alvarado Niles Road showed multiple units from agencies including the Alameda County Sheriff's Department and Union City, Fremont, Newark and BART police including SWAT teams.
Multiple officers at the perimeter of the scene appeared to have rifles drawn an aimed at the building where the incident took place.
"We're not sure if they were using it as a residence or a business. Details still being worked out. Our focus is getting individuals involved into custody," Modeste said.
At one point, a male individual was seen walking with his hands raised towards a large group of officers who had their weapons drawn. The man was made to lie down on the ground and was placed in handcuffs.
Union City police said officers may have some people detained as they investigate.
