Decision On Imperiled Cal Sports Delayed
BERKELEY (AP) -- A decision on whether the University of California's baseball team and four other programs will be reinstated has been delayed.
UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said an announcement from the school planned for Thursday wouldn't happen as scheduled and he wasn't sure any news would come Friday, either.
Chancellor Robert Birgeneau had been set to announce whether the baseball, men's and women's gymnastics and women's lacrosse teams would be saved after a decision in September to eliminate the programs after this school year. The men's rugby team also is hoping to avoid being reclassified as a "varsity club sport," a new category at Cal.
Former Cal and major league baseball player Doug Nickle said "Save Cal Sports" had raised about $15 million to support the five programs.
