Danville's Chris Wondolowski 'Gutted' After Missing Scoring Chance At World Cup
DANVILLE (CBS SF) - San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski narrowly missed on his chance to score one of the biggest goals in recent U.S. Soccer history Monday, and he appears to be blaming himself for the team's 2-1 extra time loss to the favored Belgians.
The Earthquakes' all-time leading scorer was briefly alone with the ball in stoppage time with only the Belgian keeper - who was charging at him - to beat. Wondo, as quakes fans know him, quickly chipped the ball and sent it sailing over the goal rather than into it.
Had the Danville-born forward been able to connect, it likely would have sent the U.S. team on to the round of eight, without having to play stoppage time against the Belgian squad that had largely dominated the game. The Belgians finally broke through for two goals in the first half of extra time, and though the Americans snapped in a goal of their own, it was not enough to advance.
Wondolowski had appeared in just one previous game during the tournament, the late moments of the 2-2 draw against Portugal. Still, the 31-year-old will carry fond memories of his time representing Team USA in Brazil, and will be back dominating games for the Quakes shortly.
