Danville Bank Rob Suspect Had Account; Tracked By K-9
DANVILLE (BCN) - A 37-year-old man was arrested Monday after he allegedly robbed a Wells Fargo bank in Danville by threatening to blow it up, Danville police Chief Steve Simpkins said Tuesday.
At about 3:15 p.m., a man walked into the bank at 156 Diablo Road and threatened to blow up the building unless he was given money, Simpkins said.
Witnesses told police the man had one hand in is coat pocket and was holding a cell phone in the other, Simpkins said.
The man left the bank after he was given some cash.
Officers responded to teller alarms activated at the bank. Among them were Officer Mike Ireland and his police dog "Donna", a Belgian Malinois that has been with the department since 2006, Simpkins said.
Donna quickly picked up the robber's scent and tracked him to a nearby apartment complex, Simpkins said.
Meanwhile, bank employees learned that the suspect had an account at the bank and were able to look up his exact address, Simpkins said.
Officers entered the apartment and arrested the suspect, identified as Vahidreza Einy, Simpkins said.
Witnesses identified Einy as the robber and police were able to confirm his identity through bank surveillance footage.
When officers searched Einy's apartment, they allegedly found the cash that had been stolen from the bank along with other evidence.
Einy was booked into county jail on suspicion of bank robbery.
"What I'm most proud of is how my officer's dog went straight to the apartment complex," Simpkins said.
He said the arrest was "good work on the part of the bank and good work on the part of the dog's nose."
