Daily Madden: Krzyzewski Mark; Old Coaches Return
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - With the NCAA basketball tournament in full swing, John Madden said he and his group is not quite up to speed yet with watching all the games on all his television sets at once.
During his daily KCBS Radio chat, Madden said it seems to him that there's more interest in talking about the tournament than actually viewing it.
One aspect of the tournment that Madden said he has enjoyed is watching the exploits of Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Krzyzewski reached the 900 career win mark Sunday with a third-round victory over the Michigan Wolverines. Krzyzewski now needs just three more victories to pass Bob Knight as the all-time leader among Division I coaches.
With Knight and Krzyzewski so successful using such different styles, Madden noted that the key to coaching longevity is not trying to emulate anyone else. "If you're going to be in it for a long time, the only approach is being yourself," said Madden.
News that former NFL head coaches Jerry Glanville and Marty Schottenheimer were headed back to the coaching ranks in the came as a surprise to Madden. Glanville has been name head coach and general manager of the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League. Schotteheimer was rumored to be headed to the UFL's Virginia Destroyers.
Madden and former San Francisco 49ers star Ronnie Lott co-chair a NFL safety panel with Schottenheimer also a member of that panel. Madden said he hadn't heard the rumor an would have to "check that out."
For Schottenheimer, the move makes sense, according to Madden. "That's a way to not jump all the way in the (coaching) pool, just stick you toe in a little," he said.
Madden added he thinks the UFL could be a decent developmental league for the NFL.
