Daily Madden: Zito's Class, Work Rewarded
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Following back-to-back wins behind pitchers Barry Zito and Ryan Vogelsong, the San Francisco Giants meet the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League pennant in Game 7 of the NLCS Monday night.
"One of the most impressive things to me is Barry Zito," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "If you look back when he was down, and everyone was down on him, and 'too much money,' and he wasn't even active in the playoffs and all that stuff - he just took it with class. He was a gentleman. He just shut up and took it and worked his way back. Of all the things the Giants are doing, that is the most impressive - the way Barry Zito handled being down and worked to come back and just shut his mouth. I think there's a lesson there for all of us."
The New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins 27-23 Sunday despite another stellar game by rookie Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
"He's the fastest quarterback I've ever seen," Madden said. "Every defensive coach in the history of football at every level worries more about speed than anything else. Most of the time, it's the speed of the wide receiver... but definitely if you're playing the Redskins, it's the speed of the quarterback." (8:40)
