Daily Madden: Why Super Bowl Teams Need Two Weeks
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The San Francisco 49ers depart Sunday for New Orleans., a full week after their victory in the NFC Championship. Why two weeks between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl? "When you win the championship game, you immediately go into the ticket business, and you go into the hotel business and you go into the airline ticket business," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"Not only everyone who has ever known you but everyone who knows anyone who knows you is going to contact you for tickets and hotels... My thing when I went was get all that done (in the first week). If you didn't have the two weeks, you'd have all that stuff mixed in with your (game) preparation. And man, the way the Super Bowl is today and how big it is today, that would be impossible."
The parents and sister of Super Bowl head coaches Jim and John Harbaugh held a conference call with the national media Thursday morning, and officially declared their neutrality. "I'm really happy for them; they have to be proud as heck," Madden said. "I still say that a problem looms right around the corner, and that's that one of them has to lose."
Madden noted he's talked to Archie Manning about how he deals with having his sons Peyton and Eli compete as NFL quarterbacks. "He told me the one that he always has to talk to and spend the time with is the one who loses," John said. "It's hard to lose. It hurts to lose."
