Daily Madden: Who Is To Blame For Tarell Brown's Missed Payday?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - 49ers starting cornerback Tarell Brown forfeited a $2 million increase in his 2013 base salary when he didn't show up for the team's voluntary off-season workouts.
Brown said he was unaware of the contract clause and fired his agent.
"One of the things that players always say is that it is a business," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "If it is a business, you have to take care of your business. You have agents and you have advisers and all that stuff, but still, you bear the responsibility... I'm surprised that the club didn't notify him and tell him that you're losing this money by not coming. It's just hard for me to imagine how a guy could have a two million dollar bonus out there for working out and one, not do it, but two, not know it was there."
Madden said Brown will have to put the episode behind him.
"This is profession football. We're not talking about little league here... He can blame an agent, he can blame the club, he can blame all these people. But it still boils down to him," said Madden.
Las Vegas odds makers have made the 49ers the favorite to win the Super Bowl this season.
"That's probably where I would put them," Madden said. "On one hand, I say it doesn't mean a doggone thing because you have to play. And on second hand, if I were to rate them, I would rate them number one also." (7:10)
