Daily Madden: When Broadcasters Play The Game
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Pro golf broadcaster Gary Koch may not be behind the mic for coverage of this week's U.S. Senior Open in Omaha because he qualified to play in the tournament.
"I don't think I ever would have gone from a broadcaster down to play," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "I could have gone down to coach though... You think you understand it and you think that you can make everything make sense. But having to do it would be a little more difficult. But I thought right up to the end of my broadcasting (career) that I could go down and coach anytime."
Madden said fans of any sport will be experiencing more of what happens on the field with the expanded use of microphones and cameras.
"In the NFL we're going to put cameras in the locker rooms now before the games while the players are getting dressed and tapes," Madden said. "We have mics on the center and guards that pick up everything. I'm going to propose that they feed that to the house -- that if you're at the game, you're able to hear that same stuff that you can hear on TV." (7:25)
