Daily Madden: Changes Come With New Pac-12 TV Deal
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Four Stanford and two Cal football games will be pushed back this fall to accommodate a prime time broadcast as part of the new multi-billion Pac-12 television deal with ESPN and ABC.
John Madden told the KCBS morning crew that it made sense when high schools played on Friday, colleges on Saturday and the NFL on Sunday.
"I think when we get away from that, we over-saturate the sport," Madden said. "Football's not played on Wednesday night."
Madden said it isn't obvious how the deal will work out for the networks.
"I think they're paying seven million dollars a game," said Madden, who noted that they probably have plans to bring in revenue through re-broadcasts and other outlets.
Madden said you will rarely see the good teams play early afternoon games now that there is the pull of prime time money.
The coach also weighed in on the disappearance of good nicknames. The crew pointed out that the best nicknames now are ones that people give themselves. Madden said those don't count:
"I played in college with a guy who called himself Tank," I told him 'Tank, you can't call yourself tank.'''
He also explained the rules for earning the nickname "Bubba," and weighed in on the latest antics by receiver Chad Ochocinco.
