Daily Madden: What Now For Drafted Players?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Due to an ongoing dispute between players and management, it's unclear what happens next for the 32 players who were picked in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night.
John Madden told the KCBS morning crew that with the lockout lifted at least for now, he expects players to show up at the team headquarters and start studying.
"As far as I know, and it can change at any time... the players can report, they can work with the coaches, they can get their playbooks, they can get their film," said Madden. "I'm doing that with any player that I draft.... I'm not sure how long I'm going to have to work with them, so I want to get them started."
The 49ers used their number seven pick to draft Aldon Smith, a little-known defensive end from Missouri.
"I don't know anything about him to have any thoughts on him," Madden said. "He plays a position that I think you should be able to play right away, and has a pretty good chance to dominate right away."
Madden also explains how the final picks in the first round got shuffled due to a botched trade between Baltimore and Chicago. He said the clock can make the decision making process difficult, especially when trades get involved.
"That kind of thing happens all the time," said Madden. "You have to think ahead."(8:30)
