Daily Madden: U.S. Open Tennis, Start Of NFL Season
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The U.S. Open tennis tournament is having some problems with Mother Nature as rain has caused lengthy delays and matches like Roger Federer's on Monday night/Tuesday morning, have been forced to start around midnight on the East Coast.
John Madden talked to the KCBS morning crew and said while he didn't stay up for the Federer match, he has enjoyed the commentary throughout the tournament from both John McEnroe and Chris Evert.
Coach Madden also looked at the start of the NFL season, including the news this past weekend that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is likely to miss the season opener. He said the loss of Manning can't truly be measured just on the field.
Madden also looked at the San Francisco 49ers situation at quarterback. Alex Smith has been named the starter and he is being backed up by a pair of rookies. He said he's okay with that plan, as unorthodox as it may be, because he sees the team trying to build for the future.
