Daily Madden: Trimming An NFL Roster No Easy Task
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - NFL teams have to cut 22 players by Saturday afternoon as they set their rosters for next week's season openers. "As a coach this was probably always the toughest time of the year," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"That was not an easy task... You have to give it time to get everything right, but you can't overdo it because you have to get ready for your opener," said Madden. "I know that I had times where I spent too much time in this process and maybe didn't spend enough time getting ready for the opener. And we weren't great on opening day."
The 49ers have to decide whether to keep B.J. Daniels as a third quarterback, behind Colin Kaepernick and back-up Colt McCoy. "That's a good problem to have," Madden said. "You know who your starter is. You're strong there. You're very good at that position, unlike the Raiders. They don't even have a starter."
QB Terrelle Pryor had a poor game for the Raiders in their pre-season loss to the Seahawks Thursday night. Matt Flynn, the team's other quarterback, hasn't been impressive in pre-season action and has a sore arm. So who should start the season for the Raiders? "Usually you think what would I do?" Madden said. "To be honest with you I don't know what I would do."
