Daily Madden: Tim Brown's 'Weird' Super Bowl Allegations
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown is claiming former coach Bill Callahan sabotaged Oakland's chances of winning the Super Bowl ten years ago by making late changes in the game plan. "I think it's just a weird deal," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"I have no idea where it came from or how this could happen or why it's been ten years ... The game plan is really just a bunch of plays, and it's how you call them in the game. And you call them in the game according to the situation and obviously the score. The Raiders had a problem running the ball, they had a problem with turnovers and they had a problem with turnovers turning into touchdowns. So they were fighting an uphill battle, and that will tend to change the game plan, too."
Brown claimed Callahan disliked his team and wanted his friend Jon Gruden, coach of the victorious Tampa Bay Bucs, to win the game. Callahan called the claim ludicrous.
Meanwhile, UCLA researchers say they've identified a protein that shows up in people who have had repeated concussions. It's possible it could some day be used as a marker for future brain trouble. Madden said it's promising research for NFL players. "Maybe when you reach a certain marker, that's it, you have to retire," Madden said. "That's the next step, and someday we're going to have that... If we can get indicators while they're still playing or anticipating playing, that's really going to help."
