Daily Madden: Tiger's Return To The Top
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando by five strokes Sunday, his first PGA Tour win since 2009.
"He hasn't won in a long time, but he's been pretty close," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "I don't think he's ever going to be the old dominant Tiger that we all knew at one time. But by the same token, I don't think he's finished either."
There are reports that New Orleans coach Sean Payton, suspended for the 2012 season by the NFL for the bounty system scandal, wants to speak to NFL owners at their meetings this week. John said he's not surprised.
"Both he and General Manager Mickey Loomis decided to go to the meeting," Madden said. "He wouldn't just slide in there and slide out. If you're going to slide in and slide out quietly, you wouldn't even go. So I can see that he kind of has a mission in going there."
Madden's friend Bert Sugar, the legendary boxing writer and historian, died Sunday at age 75.
"Bert Sugar was one of those Damon Runyon type characters that was at every fight," John said. "He had that hat that he wore all the time and he had the cigar... He always had a smile on his face, and he always had a story... He was fun to be around." (8:30)
