Daily Madden: The Test Against The Best

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has said he'll play some key backups, including QB Colin Kaepernick, against the Texans' first-string defense in Saturday's third exhibition game.

"That's the key seeing them against other starters," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "If you're thinking about a guy being a starter or making your club and you're going to have to use him...you want to play that player against the best to get a true test of him."

Madden said it's too early to judge Kaepernick's potential as a pro quarterback. "It's a long process," John said.

"There's no way that a quarterback can come in on a team like the 49ers and be a big impact (player) this year... This is as tough a year for a rookie quarterback to come into a situation as there could be, with a new coach, a new system, (and) no offseason programs, and then in three or four weeks of pro football training be ready to be a pro football quarterback."

The Yankees hit three grand slams off A's pitchers in beating Oakland 22-9 Thursday.

"Forget the grand slams and three homeruns, but that's getting a lot of guys on base a lot of times," Madden said. The Yankees sent 16 batters to the plate with the bases loaded. "You really get whipped when you have that many guys on base to have that many opportunities." (7:10)
