Daily Madden: The Raiders Gamble On Josh Cribbs
OAKLAND (KCBS) - The Oakland Raiders are hoping wide receiver and kick return specialist Josh Cribbs is as effective as he was before he had knee surgery after last season. The Raiders signed the former Cleveland Browns player to a one year contract.
"If he's healthy and can return kicks the way he did a few years ago, that's going to be a big, big help for the Raiders," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "Those guys that are good kick returners, you can put them in the game and just get the ball in their hands."
Cribbs has an NFL-high eight kickoff return touchdowns in his eight seasons in Cleveland, but the Browns released him after he injured his knee. The Raiders signed Cribbs on Thursday.
"The trainers have gotten so much better, the rehab has gotten so much better," Madden said. "There was a time when you'd get one of those knees, your career was done. And then there was a time when it would take a couple years and maybe you could still play but you wouldn't be the same guy. Then along comes (Vikings running back) Adrian Peterson and he shows not only can you do it in a year, and not only can you be the same guy, you can be better than the guy." (8:20)
