Daily Madden: The Olympic Club's Tough Test
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The sun broke out at the often-foggy Olympic Club in San Francisco for Thursday's first round of the U.S. Open and more sunny weather is forecast for the weekend.
"Everyone is going to want to come here now," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "The blimp shots, the shots from up above that show the whole San Francisco Bay, the bridges...those pictures are amazing. One good day at the coast that gets on national television is going to get you more friends than you've ever had that want to come and visit you."
On the golf course, only six players finished the first round under par.
"One of the things about the Olympic Club, and all the golfers talked about it yesterday, is about how tough the first six holes are," Madden said. "I always thought that course design -- and maybe this was an old tale that got to be lore that really isn't true -- was that you start off easy and then you get a little more difficult and end up really tough on a golf course. But Olympic Club starts you off with those first six that are really, really difficult."
John recalled the day he went to the practice tee at a pro tournament to see what he could learn by studying the legendary swing of Fred Couples. Madden said he didn't learn much.
"Me trying to be like Fred Couples, when you really think about it, is stupid." (6:25)
