Daily Madden: The NFL's Officiating Mess
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - NFL replacement refs threw 24 flags in the Patriots-Ravens game Sunday night, including one for pass interference that led to a disputed field goal giving the Ravens a one-point victory.
Both coaches yelled at the officiating crew throughout the game. Patriots coach Bill Belichick is expected to be fined by the league for grabbing the arm of an official as they were leaving the field. "I think if they don't get that stopped, it's going to get worse," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew Monday. "I think (Belichick) will be made an example of."
Meanwhile, the NFL and the officials' union reportedly met all day Sunday, though there's no sign a settlement is near. "I don't think the discussion is, you know, is this officiating good, is it getting better," Madden said. "It's something you can't defend... You can't even say that they're trying hard. Not knowing the rules kind of bothers me."
