Daily Madden: The Kaepernick-RG III Showdown
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 6-4 49ers face the 3-7 Redskins and quarterback Robert Griffin III in Washington Monday night. Both RG III and 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick seem to be struggling.
"They probably got too much fanfare last year, and then they're probably getting too much grief this year," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "The Redskins are a mess, though, so this is a good time for the 49ers to be catching them. I think RG III is going to be fine. But you know people forget what he went through. He got hurt at the end of the season in the playoffs, had major knee surgery, didn't do anything in the off-season... I have too much respect for the game to think that you can not do any of those things, be in your second year as a starting quarterback in the NFL and be successful... If he gets through this year without getting hurt again, he'll get back to being himself."
And Kaepernick?
"He's going to be fine," Madden said. "He just needs a little help... Some speed at wide receiver, some health players, and maybe some change in scheme and stuff like that. I think he's just going through a little dip here."
The 4-6 Raiders host the 4-6 Titans in Oakland Sunday.
"Both these teams are struggling," Madden said. "You can say that they both have a chance to be in the playoffs. I don't necessarily believe that. They're both 4-6. And as Bill Parcells used to say, you are what your record says you are. But I think there are still goals here. I would think the Raiders need to find out between now and the end of the season (if) they have a quarterback going forward. Or do they need one in the draft?"
Undrafted rookie quarterback Matt McGloin, who led the Raiders to last week's victory over the Texans, will start Sunday. (6:05)
