Daily Madden: The Giants Grind On
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Champagne was sprayed in the clubhouse again Tuesday night after the San Francisco Giants won the last of three consecutive one-run games with the Washington Nationals to advance to the National League Championship Series.
"It's a celebration that you earn," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "They're really grinders. Whatever it takes, they're going to hang in there, hang in there, hang in there, get a play, whatever it may be, and win a game. And then after you go through those types of things you deserve a good celebration."
Madden said the excitement of the close games was contagious.
"Next to pro football playoffs -- that's who I am, where I come from -- and a big championship fight, I think there's nothing more exciting than playoff baseball... There's so much at stake, and as you watch the game, there's so much at stake on every play."
Madden said there will be many plays the Nationals and their fans will dwell on.
"It's not only one night that you have to think about it, or a day or even a week, it's a whole off-season," Madden said. "When it's one game and you have another game shortly thereafter, you can only think about it for a short while. But when you have an entire off season, man that's all you think about. And if you stop thinking about it, there are people out there that will remind you about it." (6:55)
