Daily Madden: The Dark Side Of Fantasy Leagues
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Baseball and football fantasy leagues keep hundreds of thousands of fans busy every week. But are they good or bad for the home team?
John Madden told the KCBS morning crew he's concerned fantasy leagues and other interactive fan distractions are having an impact on ballpark and stadium attendance.
"If fans are going to continue to go and watch the games live," Madden said, "you need to provide the same things at the stadium that they can get at home, or they're going to stay at home... That's becoming a real thing, and it needs to be addressed."
Do fantasy teams also cloud fan loyalty? John thinks so.
"You go to a Raider game or 49er game, why do you care how Chicago does against Green Bay? Well, Aaron Rodgers may be your quarterback. In some instances you care more about that game than you do the game you're going to... It used to be, who's going to win the Super Bowl this year... Now it's who should I play at quarterback."
