Daily Madden: The Brees-Saints Stalemate
NEW ORLEANS (KCBS) - Quarterback Drew Brees said he is "extremely frustrated" with the lack of progress in his contract negotiations with New Orleans Saints management. Brees hasn't participated in voluntary training with the club, and the team's first off-season practices start next week.
"I can't figure out why they waited so long, and obviously Drew Brees can't either," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "I'm not talking about the last month or two, I mean, the Saints have been through a lot with their bounty-gate and all that stuff, but they knew this was coming."
Brees hasn't participated in voluntary training with the club, and the team's first off-season practices start next week.
"That's probably what they're arguing about - not necessarily how much you're going to pay him, it's going to be how much you're going to guarantee him and how long the contract is going to be," said the former coach.
Madden said he expects Brees to stay with the Saints, but nothing is for certain. "We've learned that lesson years and years ago, when Joe Montana wasn't a 49er, you know, that it could happen to anyone. It happened to Johnny Unitas. It happened to Joe Namath." (6:50)
