Daily Madden: The Difference Between Fans And Thugs
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt and Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Jamey Carroll both addressed fans at AT&T Park Monday night, condemning the attack on Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodgers Stadium last week. John Madden told the KCBS morning crew Tuesday that it's important to distinguish fans from the thugs who attacked Stow. "Fans are fans and thugs are thugs," he said. "Sometimes thugs get mixed in and called fans, but they never were."
Madden praised the Giants for awarding former Giant and current Dodgers infielder Juan Uribe his World Series ring on the field before the game, instead of in private as originally planned. "I had the feeling the Giants players really wanted him to have that (ceremony)," said Madden.
In the game itself, Madden was impressed with Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, who hasn't allowed a Giants run in three starts against them. "He's just a better pitcher than they are hitters."
Meanwhile, two former University of San Diego basketball players have been charged in a sports betting/game fixing scandal. John said players or coaches involved in gambling are the most dangerous threat to sports. "It can seep in anywhere... It has to be policed and watched." (8:05)
