Daily Madden: The Best Defense Wins Again
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Seattle Seahawks was the superior team in all phases of the game in their crushing 43-8 Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday.
"They did all the things you talk about as a coach," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "You have to run fast, you have to hit hard, you have to wrap up, you have to get the guy to the ground... Seattle won every part of it. They won with their offense, they won with their defense, and they won with their special teams. They won all three phases. Not only won, but they dominated all three phases."
The Broncos led the league in offense, but scored only eight points Sunday.
"I thought their offensive line, and specifically the middle of their offensive line, would do a better job of pass protection than they did," Madden said, noting he thought Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning also could have played better. "He's a timing passer and a rhythm passer. And, you know, eventually he gets his timing and he gets his rhythm. It's just a matter of time. And it never did come. Having said that, the Seattle defense had a heck of a lot to do with that."
The Seahawks showed why they led the league in defense.
"I was one that has always believed that good defense and a running game is the way to win, and that will beat great offense," Madden said. "But I thought Peyton Manning would trump that. (I thought) Peyton's playing so well, the rest of that stuff doesn't make any difference. And then you watch the game and you say 'it still does make a difference.'" (6:30)
