Daily Madden: The 49ers Void Their Trade For Eric Wright
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - After cornerback Eric Wright failed his physical, the 49ers voided their trade for him with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Did Wright's off-field transgressions, including a newly-disclosed July 12 DUI arrest in Los Angeles, have anything to do with the 49ers' move?
"You make a trade but it's really not finalized until the guy shows up to play and passes a physical," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "A trade is a big one, because you're always worried about getting used goods... So that's your out, and passing (or failing) your physical can mean any one of a number of things."
With NFL training camps opening this week, Madden is predicting renewed interest in pre-season games.
"There was never anything wrong with pre-season football, it was just having to pay regular prices for pre-season football, or having pre-season football games on your season ticket package," Madden said. "It wasn't that (fans) didn't like pre-season football. You look at the NFL now, and you get people watching the combine -- guys running around in their underwear. People are watching the draft, people are watching the schedule release... (Pre-season) is not as good as regular season obviously, because it doesn't count. But it's better than a lot of the other stuff you're going to watch."
