Daily Madden: The 49ers Sign Another QB
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson, the former Tampa Bay backup who played for coach Jim Harbaugh for three seasons at the University of San Diego.
"That name has come up from time to time as someone that somewhere (Harbaugh) would like to get in the fold just to take a look at as a pro," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "That's not a bad thing to have a lot of quarterbacks, because if it gets to be a problem where you have too many that can play, then that's very good trade bait."
Johnson joins projected starter Alex Smith and last season's back-up Colin Kaepernick on the 49ers quarterback list.
"You can have your guy, but your guy is your guy until you find someone better," John said. "And so you keep looking for someone better. It's kind of your responsibility as a team and an organization to try and get better at the quarterback position and every position. So anytime you have a chance to look at something that could make you better, you do it."
Andrew Luck was the big attraction at Thursday's pro day at Stanford for NFL scouts.
"I think if there's such a word as 'over-scrutinization' that's what they're doing," the former coach said. "Throwing the ball to guys that aren't covered without helmets... that's just playing catch... It's still how you play the game... Evaluate how they play, not what they did in a pro day." (7:45)
