Daily Madden: The 49ers Need Competition At The Kicker Spot
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Troubled by the inconsistency of field goal kicker David Akers, the 49ers signed former Redskin Billy Cundiff to compete with Akers. "If you don't do something, then you're just living with it," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"If you do something, you're messing with an area that is fragile anyway in the playoffs. I think that was a tough decision, but I also think that you have to have something there so you can make a decision (in games), and I think it was a smart move."
Andy Reid, fired as the coach of the Eagles on Monday, is interviewing Wednesday for the head coaching jobs at Kansas City and Arizona. "The season is hectic and (as a coach) you don't think about these things during the season," John said.
"The day after the season, you're fired, and now you have to think about it. And I don't know that you're ready to, but you have to. And not only think about it, but you have to do something about it, you have to make a decision." What kinds of questions will Reid be asked by Chiefs and Cardinals management? "(They'll) want to know what your plan is to get this organization back to being competitive," John said. "What free agents you would go for, the draft, I mean that whole thing. 'We have a problem here, we're not a good team. What's your plan to make us a good team?'" (9:05)
