Daily Madden: The 49ers Look For Help On Offense From A Defensive Specialist
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Former New York Jets coach and defensive specialist Eric Mangini has been hired by the 49ers as an offensive consultant.
"Now that these staffs are so big and have so many assistants, like up to 25 assistants, they can really get into specialties in the specialties," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
Mangini was also the New England Patriots defensive coordinator. Why hire a defensive specialist as an offensive consultant?
"One thing you like to do offensively is you like to check with your defensive people (to find out) what they think of your ideas. In other words, 'if we did this, and then we did this and then this, what would you do? What would stop it?' Your defensive guys are working on defense all the time, so they don't have time to tell you what they would do...So they're bringing in a guy in, Eric Mangini, who can talk about not only what the defense would probably do, but what advantage you can take of the defense."
Mangini had most recently been working as an NFL analyst for ESPN.
"This is one (position) that drags him out of TV, gets him back into football with a good coaching staff and a good team," Madden said. "And then from there, he'll probably jump to a coordinator someplace and then from there back to a head coach." (8:05)
