Daily Madden: The 49ers Have No Excuses
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The 49ers lost at home to the lowly St. Louis Rams 13-10 Sunday.
"There's no way they should lose to the Rams," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "I know (Rams coach) Jeff Fisher. I know that they're tough guys and got eight sacks. But they're not a good team. If you're going to be a championship team, you have to win the games you're supposed to win. You can't go out there and play the way they did. You can go to that last play and the fumble and the score or not, but they shouldn't have even gotten to that position."
With quarterback Colin Kaepernick constantly under pressure, the 49ers struggled to score.
"Sometimes it's the offensive line, sometimes it's the call -- the way they slide, sometimes it's getting away from the run," Madden said.
"(The Rams) didn't seem to have much respect for the run. You know that's what slows down a pass rush -- you mix in a running game and you make that front group play run too. And they were just teeing off."
Madden said the final play -- a fumble on a quarterback sneak on the goal line -- was symptomatic of the 49ers' troubles.
"I always had a rule that there's no excuse for a bad snap. We can talk (about how) pro football is really hard and the best players in the world are playing. There's no excuse on any level for a bad snap, a bad exchange between the center and the quarterback. There's no excuse... I don't say there are many things easy about football. Snapping the ball to the quarterback is easy." (6:35)
