Daily Madden: Steelers-Raiders Stir Up Memories
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 2-4 Steelers meet the 2-4 Raiders at the Coliseum Sunday .
"I know it's not the same, and no one will ever confuse these Pittsburgh Steelers and Raiders with those Pittsburgh Steelers and Raiders," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "But it still is the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Oakland Raiders, and that gets the old gut to churn a little still."
Madden coached the Raiders from 1969 to 1978, years that featured many memorable games against the Steelers.
"You look back after all these years and the guys that played in those games - between 15 and 20 are in the Hall of Fame."
John said this season's Raiders have a good shot at a win Sunday.
"The one thing you have to worry about is (Steelers quarterback) Ben Roethlisberger. He's capable of going off and throwing five touchdown passes.... You have to get to him. You have to get him off his spot. You have to make him run. And after you get him off his spot and make him run, you still have the toughest thing to do is get him to the ground."
The 49ers are in London for a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday. With the stress of overseas travel, Madden said the 49ers are lucky to be facing Jacksonville.
"If you read the paper upside down, the Jaguars would be number one," John said. "You know how you always say, 'Well you have to watch out, this could be a trap game, you don't want to step into something, you better be ready or they could get you?' None of that's true in this game.... Usually I will give a chance to just about anyone. You know if they get turnovers that could change it, or if they get touchdowns in the kicking game, those things can happen to you and you can be the better team and lose the game. I don't see any way, any way at all, that could happen this week.... (The Jaguars) are about as far away from being a competitive team in the NFL as you can get." (7:25)
