Daily Madden: Stanford Football Head Coach Sizes Up Season
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Stanford heads into the 2011 college football season ranked in the top ten in pre-season polls. Head coach David Shaw told John Madden and the KCBS morning crew Wednesday that his team's talent goes far beyond his Heisman-candidate quarterback, Andrew Luck.
"I credit (former Stanford coach) Jim Harbaugh bringing the mentality here that we were going to recruit coast-to-coast, and not just find good football players, but find tough football players," Shaw said.
"There are really a lot of bright smart offensive linemen that are really tough and physical, and that's where it starts for us," he said.
Madden agreed. "I never really went into college head coaching," said Madden, "but if I did, I'd have a coach that just specialized in recruiting offensive linemen."
Madden said Stanford football should draw more fans. "With the team that you have, and the excitement with the team that you have... that would be a fun place to go. A great stadium, a great spectacle... that place ought to be filled."
Shaw agreed. "You're hired," he told Madden. (8:25)
