Daily Madden: Stadiums Don't Win Games
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Giants lost their second in a row to the A's in Oakland Tuesday night and have lost 13 of their last 17 on the road. The Sharks lost Game 7 of the NHL West Semifinals to the Kings in Los Angeles, a series in which the home team won every game. Is there a big home field advantage in all sports?
"I hate that thinking," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "If it were football, I'd say, you know, a stadium has never won a game in its life. Home and away, it's the same guys against the same guys. Go play. But if it's another sport, I start to believe," the former coach said, noting he watched both the hockey and baseball games Tuesday night.
"As a coach, I don't believe any of that. I think that's a bunch of baloney. You got to play through that... (But) I get mad at myself when I become a fan. I start to believe that stuff that I'm so vehement against as a football person."
The Mets honored Mariano Rivera before their game Tuesday night, as the Yankees closer, who is retiring at the end of the season, threw out the first pitch. Rivera later blew the save as the Mets won 2-1.
"That doesn't take anything away from him," Madden said. "That happens. He's still the greatest. He's the best." (8:20)
