Daily Madden: Simpson's Quiet Move To The Top
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Webb Simpson's one over par was enough to win the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club's Lake Course in San Francisco Sunday.
"This was one of those times that I was rooting for the course," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "These pros beat up golf courses so much. You know, you see 15, 20, 25 under, and when you see even par or plus one, you say dog gone it, the course did well... That was a test of your talent to play golf for four days, and I loved it."
After trailing by six strokes after two rounds, Simpson quietly moved to the top and was already sitting in the clubhouse Sunday as day-three leaders Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell faltered at the end.
"Being under the radar and all those things kind of worked for him," John said. "No one was watching him."
Tiger Woods had a poor weekend after staying near the top through Friday's round.
"I took that sucker bet," Madden said. "They took the field and I took Tiger. I felt pretty good about it after Friday. Saturday, not so good. Sunday I felt like I was taken." (6:45)
