Daily Madden: Should Roughing Calls Be Reviewed?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Seattle Seahawks got a huge break at a key moment in Sunday's game when the 49ers were incorrectly called for roughing the passer on a third down incompletion in the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks scored a touchdown two plays later and won the game 17-7.
On Monday, the NFL's head of officiating, Dean Blandino, said the wrong call was made, reports 247 Sports.
"It's close, but when you look at it on tape, Moody's head is up, he hits with more of the side and the facemask to the body of the quarterback, and so, in our review, with the ability to look at it in slow motion, it's not a foul," Blandino said.
Could the play have been corrected on the field? Should personal fouls be reviewed?
"That would be the only way, giving the referee a little help," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. NFL officials later acknowledged the call was a bad one.
"If you look at a replay of where (the referee was), he's basically on the right side of the quarterback 20 yards back from the line of scrimmage, and he's not in a position to see that. When you start talking about the (tackler's) head being down, and the head being the hairline and all that stuff, the referee can't call it from that position... They have to do something with the mechanics, and I think number two, it's possible to make it a review. I think the day is probably coming where every play is going to be reviewable." (7:35)
