Daily Madden: Serena Or The Field No Longer An Option
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Defending champion and top seed Serena Williams was knocked out of Wimbledon Monday in a stunning upset by Sabine Lisicki. "Everyone was on (the Serena) bandwagon, including me," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"Over the years I've taken Serena against the field just because she seems so dominant, and really like the best player, and no one's close to her. And this year, I even felt more strongly about that... It just goes to show you really don't know enough about all the players to know where the real competition is, or at least I don't." Lisicki entered the match as the number 23 seed.
"One of the great things for sports is when we know who's going to win," Madden said. "And all the wise guys know, and all the pundits, and everyone knows and can tell you who's going to win. And then it doesn't happen that way."
Both Williams and Lisicki have among the fastest serves on the women's tour at around 120 miles an hour. "I would think when someone is hitting the ball that hard at you, that your first instinct would be survival," Madden said. (6:40)
