Daily Madden: Seattle Gets Beat But Wins The Game
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The Seahawks' anemic offense almost cost them the game against the Rams in St. Louis Monday night. But Seattle escaped with a 14-9 win to stay one game ahead of the 49ers in the NFC West. "I was really disappointed in Seattle," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "I thought the Rams played a lot better than I though they were, and the Seahawks weren't as good as I thought they were... They looked pathetic on offense." The Seattle offense gained just 135 yards. "They blamed it on the two (Seahawks) tackles," John said. "The two tackles were over-matched by the Ram defensive ends, the rushers.
But that's not an excuse. If you are over-matched, you got to help them out... Just because your two tackles are having a tough time with edge pass rushers, that doesn't mean you roll over and don't play offense at all."
In the debate over new rules regulating hits on defenseless players, Madden said quarterbacks have to assume more responsibility for protecting receivers. "Sometimes you have to blame the quarterback," John said. "When he throws it into a small window, that means that he's putting his defenseless player right close to a defensive player.... That used to be a no-no.
Now these quarterbacks throw their receivers into collisions. Because they can see it. As you go through zones, the receiver can't always see the next zone over. But the quarterback can see it." (7:15)
