Daily Madden: Russia Team Plane Crash; Coaches' Tempers
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – A Russian jet carrying top hockey team Lokomotiv crashed just after takeoff Wednesday, killing at least 43 people in what is considered one of the worst plane crashes ever involving a sports team.
John Madden talked to the KCBS morning crew about plane rides for athletic teams and said despite plenty of turbulence on some flights, the idea of problems usually don't come up.
"I don't know that there's talk about that among players and coaches because you're so focused on what you have to do when you get there," said Madden. "Especially in football because you only play once a week and you only travel 8-10 times a year. So you don't have a lot of time to think or talk about other things."
Madden also talked about this past weekend's Notre Dame football game in which Fighting Irish Head Coach Brian Kelly is in hot water after getting caught several times yelling at players on the sidelines.
"The job of a coach is to think ahead. That's where you get fouled up. You're thinking behind and then spending the whole game catching up," he said. "The influence it has on these coaches that coach young kids, that's the thing I don't like. They start to think that that's coaching and someone's a successful coach because they do that. They think that's what they have to do to kids."
Coach Madden also touched on the surprising release of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard on Tuesday and said he wouldn't be shocked if "retired" wide receiver Randy Moss comes back to the NFL, possibly rejoining the New England Patriots.
