Daily Madden: Rory McIlroy's Bad Example
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Rory McIlroy walked off the course at the PGA National after hitting his second shot in the water on the ninth hole, already seven over par for the day. "I'm not in a good place mentally," he told reporters.
"I didn't know that quitting was an option," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "And I don't think it should be for McIlroy either. When the going gets tough, you play through it. You don't quit."
PGA rules allow a player to withdraw from a round due to injury or a serious personal emergency, and McIlroy later told officials he was suffering from a painful wisdom tooth.
Fans stormed the court in Virginia after the Cavaliers upset Duke Thursday night. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said the crush made him fear for his and his players' safety.
"Every time you see that you think they have to control this because it seems to get wilder more and more every time you see one," John said. "We used to have that in football... It got to be more and more dangerous especially for the visiting team. So this is years ago when I was coaching that we eliminated that."
The NFL combine includes player interviews as coaches try to learn more about players' personalities. But John said they're prepared to answer almost any question.
"If you ask an NFL player in an interview 'if you were a plant what kind of plant would you be,' he'd have an answer to that... 'I'd be a tree therefore I'd have a lot of limbs and I could reach out and help a lot of people in this world.' Just like the Miss America contest." (7:55)
