Daily Madden: Rodgers A Big Test For 49ers Defense
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - After beating the Minnesota Vikings, the Green Bay Packers head to San Francisco to meet the 49ers on Saturday in the Divisional Playoff game. "The Packers this year haven't been as good or as strong," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"You look at just two weeks ago, (Vikings running back) Adrian Peterson won that game that the Packers had (to win) to get that bye, and he ran for over 200 yards against them. So their defense isn't a top defense, their running game isn't, maybe their offensive line isn't. But they have (quarterback) Aaron Rodgers."
Madden said the Packers defense is better now that defensive back Charles Woodson has returned from an injury.
Chip Kelly will stay as the Oregon coach rather than take an NFL head coaching job. "I heard a rumor that Phil Knight jumped in," John said, referring to the Oregon athletics mega-donor. "Isn't that the old saying that if you look at the reason for anything that happens, the first place you look at is money."
Kelly had interviewed with Cleveland, Buffalo and Philadelphia. "That kind of makes sense because (it looks like) he's going to the NFL, he's doing this interview, he's doing that interview and then, boom! He's pulled out, goes home and is going back to Oregon. Usually if a guy is not going to go and he's a college coach, he denies it right off the bat, because for the number of days that it's open, it affects recruiting."
